Kaziranga national park is situated in the Golaghat and nagaon disticts of Assam in India. Designated as the world heritage site by the UNESCO in 1985, the park boasts the world's two-third of the great one-horned rhinoceros.Covering an area of 430 sq kms, the park is bounded by Brahmaputra river in the north and the Mikir hills in the south. It is the oldest park in Assam. Kaziranga was declared a national park in 1974.Kaziranga national park hosts the highest population of tigers among the protected areas in the world and was declared a tiger resrve in 2006.The topography of Kaziranga includes landscape bearing sheer forest,tall elephant grass rugged reeds, marshes and shallow pools.
MAJOR WILDLIFE ATTRACTION
Kaziranga is famous for its vast and diverse variety of wildlife. It has largest density of one-horned rhinoceros.The great indian one-horned rhino weighing more than two tonne and with its 24" long horn that actually is not a horn but compressed hair is the centre of atrraction of the whole park. Apart from being the natural hub for the rhinoceros, Kaziranga is also home to many other wildlife species such as wild buffaloes, asiatic elephant, indian bison, wild boars,barasingha, leopards, jackals, tigers, hoolock gibbon,capped langur,civet cat,hornbills,rock pythons and monitor lizards.
kaziranga is also known for its birding population. there are more than 450 species of birds of which 18 are globally threatened.The most commonly seen birds in the Kaziranga park are green backed heron,egrets,river tern, black necked storks,bengal florican,spot billed pelican,pied horn bill, fishing eagle,patridges and falcated teals.
Elephant rides are also available to view the rhinoceros at closer range. The elephant ride last hor an hour and starts from 5.30 am. to 6.30 am.
HOW TO REACH KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK
BY AIR: The nearest airport is Jorhat which is 97 kms from the park. The other means of transport by air is from Guwahati airport which is 239 kms from the santuary but it takes a long time.
BY RAIL: The nearest railway station is Furkating which is 75 kms from Kaziranga national park.
BY ROAD: NH-37 is the nearest national highway from the park. The highway leads to Guwahati (239 kms) and Jorhat(97 kms) to the respestive destination. Private buses and taxis are also availablefrom these towns.
